Spare the rod, spoil the child?

I am sure many of us parents wonder if we are doing the right thing when we cane our children for misbehaving.

Are we doing them more harm than good?

Generally, professionals working in the child mental health industry do not advocate caning as a way to discipline a child. When a parent is angry or distressed over the child’s misbehaviour, he or she is unlikely to make a good judgment or an objective assessment.

Also, the child might learn from his parents’ harsh discipline style and use violence to resolve his future problems.

However, there are exceptions to the use of the cane. When a child is involved in an extremely dangerous behaviour such that he is likely to cause injury to himself and to others, or cause huge irreparable damage, caning might be an effective and swift method to stop the misbehaviour.

Otherwise, caning might be counterproductive and can constitute a form of abuse if meted out in an unjustified, unwarranted, excessive or extreme manner. When this happens, caning can traumatise children and make them feel unloved by their parents.

I once saw a girl who was abused after her parents’ bitter divorce. The man harboured anger and resentment towards his ex-wife and picked unfairly on the girl, who was very close to her mother. Subsequently, the girl had to be treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Studies have suggested that adults who suffered long-term physical abuse as children tend to make poor judgments in adult relationships, re-enact their traumatic experiences and even inflict self-injury to cope with their emotional turmoil, leading to tragic and disastrous results.

Below are some tips that parents can use when disciplining their children:

» Give clear and specific instructions

Tell the child what he can and cannot do. Say it in a calm voice when he is paying full attention to you. Using threats would only instil fear and cause the child to lie and keep things from you.

» Explain your expectations and the consequences of misbehaviour

Setting ground rules and limits from the very start will ensure that your child is aware of your expectations. You can also demonstrate how you expect things to be done. If your child wants other choices, give him a few simple ones to choose from.

» Reward and encourage good behaviour

Make sure any rewards or punishment meted out are immediate and effective to reinforce positive behaviour and discourage bad behaviour. Use creative methods to reward good behaviour, like awarding privileges and extra time to play. Rewards need not be monetary.

» Ignore minor misbehaviour and temper tantrums

Let your kids know that bad behaviour will not get the attention they want. Pay attention to them only when they talk nicely and behave properly.

» Handle bad behaviour effectively

Withdrawing your child’s privileges or implementing time-out sessions are some consequences that can be meted out to let your child learn that his behaviour is unacceptable. Reassure your child that he is still loved and explain your actions after he completes the punishment.

» Target wrong behaviour and scold appropriately

Telling a child that he has been a bad boy is unhelpful and might reinforce incorrect attitudes the child might have of himself. If you need to scold, do so privately to avoid causing him unnecessary embarrassment. Always maintain eye contact when you reprimand him so that he knows you are serious about it and gives you his full attention. If you have problems managing your anger, turn to your spouse or family members for support and assistance. Seek professional help if necessary.

Children are to be enjoyed and seeing them grow up is one of the greatest joys of being a parent. Disciplining kids need not be a tug-of-war and your home need not be a battle zone with caning. It is definitely not the best punishment method as there are better and more effective ways to discipline a child.

While the phrase ’spare the rod and spoil the child” is familiar to many of us, it is perhaps time to rethink and refine our concepts of disciplining our children.

Malaysian worker dies after being attacked by white tigers at zoo

‘We thought it was a show’

A CLEANER, who climbed into the enclosure of three Sumatran white tigers on Thursday was set upon and mauled to death.

Earlier before the attack, Mr Nordin Montong, 32, a contract worker from Sarawak, was seen acting strangely.

An Australian couple, who did not want to be named, said that they heard a splash and saw the worker making his way across the 10 metre-wide moat at 12.15pm.

At the other side, he looked as if he wanted the tiger ‘to check him out,’ they told The Straits Times.

Waving a broom and pail, he approached the big cats, each weighing over 100 kg.

The largest tiger lunged at him and he fell and quickly recoiled in a foetal position while trying to cover her head with the pail.

The horrified Australians and other visitors at the enclosure thought it was part of a show until one of the tigers bit Mr Nordin’s back and started dragging him to the tigers’ den.

They started screaming.

The commotion alerted a keeper nearby. He quickly used his walkie-talkie to raise an alarm.

About 20 other keepers came forward and managed to get the tigers back in the den. The police was called and an ambulance arrived at 12.45 pm.

While waiting for the ambulance, Zoo vets and keepers attended to Mr Nordin but found that he had a bite on the neck and a fractured skull.

He died shortly after.

Software consultant W.R. de Boer said he was watching the white tigers when he noticed Mr Nordin in the moat with a broom and a pail.

The 40-year-old Dutch national said that there were 20 to 30 visitors at the enclosure and he had thought thought it was a show until he saw a tiger’s claw take a swipe at Mr Nordin, who screamed out in pain.

‘We all started shouting at the tigers telling them to go away and one person even threw at umbrella at the two tigers that were attacking Mr Nordin.

The third tiger was about 10m away and did not join in the frenzy.

An Australian couple told zoo authorities that they had seen Mr Nordin shouting and throwing things when he walked past the crocodile earlier in the day.

Mr Nordin was also seen leaving the zoo in an agitated state at about 12 noon by colleagues, said the zoo director of marketing and communications Isabel Cheng.

Mr Nordin started working for the zoo in June. His family has been informed of his death.

As a precautionary measure, the Zoo has temporarily closed the White Tiger exhibit.

Police and the Zoo are investigating the incident.

Mother of 13 pregnant with number 14 just seven months after she last gave birth

Just seven months after giving birth to her 13th child, size zero mother Joanne Watson is delighted to be pregnant again.
The slim 37-year-old says she loves being pregnant and is lucky enough to have regained her pre-pregnancy figure of 7st 5lb after the birth of every child.

Just five days after giving birth to child number 13, daughter Tallulah, the supermum had no problem squeezing into a pair of size six (American size zero) jeans.

Pregnant for the 14th time: Size zero mum Joanne Watson with her supersize family

‘I’m lucky because I always sail through my pregnancies and have no symptoms whatsoever,’ says Joanne, who is three months pregnant.

Husband John, a 42-year-old haulier added: ‘I feel like I’m the happiest daddy in the world. To have so many healthy happy children and a wife who has such a fabulous figure is amazing.’

Having said that, running around after her ever-increasing brood, Mrs Watson does have more than her fair share of practice at getting rid of the baby bulge.

Mrs Watson, who featured in the Daily Mail at Christmas when we highlighted her problems providing a festive meal for 14, says there is no secret to retaining her remarkable figure.

‘I don’t really diet after I’ve given birth,’ she said at home in Guernsey. ‘I do have a real weakness for chocolate and like all mums I definitely indulge while I’m pregnant.

‘But I don’t put on much weight during each pregnancy as I don’t have a huge appetite and afterwards the excess goes very quickly.

‘I suppose I’m running around a lot after the children, taking them to school, making their meals and taking them shopping or for walks in the park so they keep me pretty fit.’

With ten sisters and three brothers, baby number 14 will have plenty of siblings to play with at the family’s four-bedroom home, including Natasha, 19, Bradley, 18, Shanice, 16, Mariah, 13, Georgia,11, Caitlin, nine, Brittany, eight, Febrianne, seven, Charlie, six, Lillyarna, four, Nerilly-Jade, three, and two-year-old Arnie and seven-month-old Tallulah.

Sadly, the couple’s fourth baby, Augustina, was born prematurely and died when she was less than a day old.

When asked if this will be the last, Joanne said: ‘I always say we’ll stop having kids when we’re good and ready. And I’m nowhere near ready to retire my maternity clothes yet.’

Delighted: Joanne Watson shows off her trim, 7st 5lb figure just 5 days after the birth of her last child
